Toluca advanced 5-4 on aggregate in the two-game quarterfinal series.

    Landon Donovan will attend the resumption of Major League Soccer bargaining and says he might return to Everton if players go on strike next week. Donovan had two goals and three assists in 13 games during an impressive 10-week loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy to Everton that ended Saturday, helping the Toffees beat Manchester United and Chelsea, the top two teams in the Premier League.

    The Red Bulls worked out at their gleaming $200 million stadium for the first time Tuesday. It may be a long time before they play a game there that counts. While the first match at Red Bull Arena is an exhibition Saturday against Brazil's Santos, Major League Soccer players are threatening to strike next week ahead of New York's MLS opener against Chicago on March 27.

    Toronto FC has sent forward Ali Gerba home while the team prepares for the season in Charleston, S.C. "Ali's performance this preseason has not been up to our expectations," Mo Johnston, Toronto FC's director of soccer, said in a statement Tuesday. "We hold all our players to a high standard, and we think that the best thing for him is a few days away from the team.

    Beckham projected to return in mid-September (AP)

    If David Beckham recovers from a torn Achilles' tendon in six months, he could rejoin Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy in time for the team's last six regular-season games. The 34-year-old midfielder had surgery Monday, a day after injuring his foot while on his second loan to Italy's AC Milan.
